Slovenia’s Choice Has High Stakes for Europe

Slovenia votes this Sunday — but the stakes go far beyond its borders.

In a new article for the Green European Journal by Tomaž Zaniuk (Policy Lab) analyses what is really at play in the upcoming elections — and why they matter for Europe as a whole.

Despite having a population of just two million, the outcome of Slovenia’s parliamentary election is likely to have ripple effects well beyond its borders. For the past four years, Slovenia has been governed by a centre-left coalition headed by prime minister Robert Golob. As he faces a formidable challenge from former premier Janez Janša, can Golob escape the incumbent curse, or will Slovenia – and Europe – swing further to the right?

As he writes:
“Slovenia’s choice is not just about national politics — it reflects broader tensions shaping Europe’s democratic and political trajectory.”

At a time of overlapping crises — from climate breakdown to geopolitical instability — Slovenia’s elections reveal a deeper struggle:
between democratic resilience and the growing pressure of illiberal and market-driven agendas.
