The article ‘Degrowth or Decolonising our Imaginaries of Progress and the Future’ critically examines the concept of ‘degrowth’. It challenges the conventional emphasis on economic growth and highlights its detrimental effects on society and the environment.

The article emphasises the role of the pandemic in exposing the weaknesses of a growth-centred economy and austerity measures. ‘Degrowth’ is proposed as a necessary reduction in the size of developed economies to achieve a sustainable equilibrium where well-being is decoupled from economic expansion. This concept is explored through an interdisciplinary lens, including democracy, justice, ecology and social care, advocating a future where economic growth is not the primary goal.

The work highlights the importance of collaboration between academia and civil society in driving transformative social change towards a more sustainable and equitable world.
